Wisconsin marijuana laws can bring steep consequences

In Wisconsin, violating drug laws can have serious consequences. Despite changing cultural perceptions on the use of marijuana, possessing even a small amount can bring penalties that may change the course of your life. What may seem like a minor infraction or something inconsequential could leave you with legal complications and the need for a strong criminal defense strategy.

As an example, one Wisconsin driver was pulled over in 1997 by police after officers received a tip, and the driver was convicted for possession of a small amount of marijuana. Despite the small amount of the drug in his vehicle, this arrest led to a series of consequences that derailed his life for many years. He lost his job, reputation and more. Even decades later, others could find themselves in similar situations because the state’s drugs laws remain much the same.

Is a change possible?

Many states have decriminalized the possession of marijuana, and Wisconsin’s governor has indicated he favors doing the same. Governor Evers has said he would be in favor of eliminating penalties for those who possess 25 grams of marijuana or less. This is a unique approach because in most states that decriminalized marijuana, there are still fines associated with possession.

There are indications that a growing number of Wisconsin’s population favors either decriminalizing or legalizing the use of marijuana for specific reasons. However, state lawmakers have made it difficult for the governor to achieve any meaningful changes. Estimates suggest that over half of the state’s drug arrests are for marijuana-related offenses.

The potential consequences

If convicted of even a minor drug offense, the consequences can be significant. A mark on your criminal record can follow you for the rest of your life, potentially affecting your job opportunities, educational opportunities, housing, child custody cases and more. One conviction can also damage your personal reputation and impact your life in other ways.

Fighting back against drug charges is important, even if you are facing charges of a misdemeanor offense. Your future is worth protecting, regardless of the nature of the alleged crime. Starting with an assessment of your case, you would be wise to take quick action to learn about the specific defense options available to you. With the right defense strategy, you may be able to avoid a conviction or mitigate the potential consequences you are up against.
