3 common Craigslist scams

Craigslist has become a hotbed for scams. Many people have begun implementing deceptive practices on the website to scam people out of their hard-earned money.

Most scams take place in the site's housing section. It is vital to remember any deceptive acts can result in jail time. People have gone to jail for all the following.

1. Asking for information before even viewing the home

People looking to rent or buy should never provide any personal information before even seeing the property. In this instance, the scammer wants to attain your personal information, including materials related to bank accounts, without even meeting you face-to-face. After receiving this information, the scammer disappears and no longer replies to any emails or phone calls. Some scammers will even ask for money before you get a chance to tour the property.

2. Posting a rental that sounds too good to be true

Renters also need to be careful of postings that are way too good. You should have an idea of how much it costs to rent an average apartment or home in your geographic area. You may come across a listing for a property that is way less than everything else. It may be a great deal, but it may also be a scammer trying to get you to sign on the dotted line quickly. Most people can discover this is a scam by researching the property in question. You can also drive by the property to see if anyone appears to already live there.

3. Offering a property they do not actually own

Occasionally, renters find a listing for a property, and research shows it is available for rent. However, the person who posted the listing is not the actual landlord. You may be able to tour the property because the actual landlord leaves it open, but you do not submit an actual application. You spend a lot of money to attempt to move in only to discover someone else technically rents the unit.
