Detective for Milwaukee P.D. accused of obstructing justice

Federal court documents reveal that a Milwaukee police detective has been charged with obstruction of justice, based on allegations that he assisted a person who was believed to be a drug dealer. The 39-year-old detective appeared in court on May 1 for an arraignment on the federal crimes.

The allegations date back to January 2011. A police informant allegedly told officers that a detective with the same first name as the accused man was protecting another alleged drug dealer. The informant stated that the drug dealer had called the detective after being stopped for a traffic violation. As police were preparing to use a drug-sniffing dog to check the vehicle for drugs, another officer arrived on the scene and allegedly spoke with the patrol officer. No search was performed. Phone records allegedly tie the officer to these events. The Complaint alleges other incidents through July 2012.

The suspected drug dealer in question was also taken into custody and charged with distribution of cocaine. The detective was released following his arraignment. It was not stated whether he has a lawyer. According to a police representative, the accused has been suspended without pay. He had most recently been working in the sensitive crimes unit.

A person who is convicted of obstruction of justice could be facing up to twenty years of imprisonment. A criminal defense attorney may be able to help in this situation by looking for possible grounds for suppressing evidence or negotiating an agreement with prosecutors that would allow the accused to avoid or reduce jail time in exchange for a guilty plea.
