Felony underage pornography charges filed against Fond du Lac man

People who use the Internet to engage in illegal activity should be aware that no matter how savvy they believe they are when it comes to computers, there's usually a law enforcement detective out there who's one step ahead.

Investigators with the Wisconsin Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force allege that a Town of Fond du Lac man was caught possessing and viewing underage pornography. The suspect, who's facing five felony charges, made an appearance this week in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court.

Agents with the task force conducted a search of the man's home late last week, in which they went through his computers and other electronics. They allegedly extracted 75 digital image files and four video files containing underage pornography. The man was already under suspicion, in part due to his 1984 conviction on charges of first-degree sexual assault of a child, for which he served three years in prison.

Bond for the current charges was set at $10,000 cash. If he makes bail, he won't be allowed to possess a computer or a cellphone with Internet access. Not surprisingly, he also won't be allowed access to pornography or to have any contact with anyone under age 18. A preliminary hearing to determine if there's enough evidence against him to take the case to trial is scheduled for June 1.

Child pornography is a central focus of the aforementioned task force, as well as Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative that aims to protect children against sexual abuse and exploitation. Agents from these groups have extremely sophisticated methods of finding evidence against sex crime suspects, particularly those accused of underage pornography. If you're accused of such a crime, you'll need an equally knowledgeable criminal defense attorney to successfully fight the charges against you. Regardless of how confident you are in your computer skills, it pays to find the best, most focused legal expertise possible when defending yourself against Internet crimes.
