Wisconsin Sex Offender Forgets to Update Registry, Faces Prison

Being charged with a sex crime is a serious matter. There are many different crimes that are considered sex crimes: sexual assault, possession of pornography, indecent exposure, and many more. Though a charge is not necessarily a conviction, it can still impact a person's life.

There is the immediate consequence of damage to the person's reputation among family and friends. Even without a conviction, the damage can be permanent. If the person charged with a sex crime is convicted, immediate penalties include a prison sentence and having to register on the sex offender registry.

What many may not realize is that being on a sex offender registry can sometimes be a lifetime registration. Additionally, Wisconsin offenders are required to register each year or if an offender changes jobs or moves. The penalties for failure to do so can be severe.

In 2009, a man who had been charged with sexual assault pled guilty to criminal sexual conduct. His sentence was 26 years in prison. Unfortunately, he is also facing the possibility of more time in prison after not updating his sex offender registration.

The man had originally been convicted of a sex crime in Wisconsin over 35 years ago. There is no information as to why the man forgot to update the registry, but failure to do so may result in an additional 10 years in prison.

As you can see, the implications of a sex crime can be more severe than expected. For someone who has to register as a sex offender, even the simple act of forgetting to update the registry after moving can land them 10 years in jail. With such serious consequences, it's important to understand what rights you have if you are charged with a sex crime.
