Wisconsin man arrested after posing as woman on Craigslist

A 19-year-old Madison man has been released on $2,500 bail after allegedly threatening to post intimate photos of a woman on the Internet unless she agreed to perform a sex act on him. Although police have yet to officially charge the man with a crime, he was booked on charges of making threats and stalking.

According to court documents, the arrest and charges against the man involve actions that began on April 25 when a University of Wisconsin-Madison student responded to an ad placed on Craigslist in which the man allegedly posed as a woman seeking a relationship with another woman. During an interview with police, the student stated that she had exchanged a series of emails with the man. She says he sent her photos of a young woman indicating that they were photos of himself. In exchange, the woman sent photos to the man including images of herself in various stages of undress. However, she maintained that she had not sent any nude photos.

On April 30, the two reportedly agreed to meet in person, but the man never showed up. He later sent her an email in which he confessed that he was actually a man. The woman then responded by telling him to delete the images of her. He allegedly refused and threatened to post the images and other personal information online if the woman would not perform the sex act that he requested. The woman then contacted university police who set up a sting to catch the man after she agreed to meet with him. The man was then taken into custody.

The man has reportedly told police that he has placed similar ads on Craiglist numerous times with responses from both men and women. Police are continuing to investigate and further charges could be pending.

Defendants accused of Internet crimes such as cyberstalking could face serious penalties such as jail time if they are convicted. An experienced Wisconsin criminal attorney may be able to assist a defendant and help to ensure they are treated fairly throughout the legal process.
