Wisconsin man charged in drug ring bust pleads not guilty

A 35-year-old Antigo man pleaded not guilty on Dec. 11 after Langlade County authorities charged him with offences related to an alleged drug ring. He was indicted by a grand jury to one count of felony conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

According to the report, the man was charged with 50 felonies for alleged drug crimes. However, the federal prosecutors requested that these charges be dismissed in favor of charging the man with one felony count of conspiracy to controlled substances. He was ultimately accused of intent to distribute approximately 500 grams of cocaine and approximately 50 kilograms of marijuana between 2009 and 2011.

A pretrial conference was set for Feb. 3, and a jury trial was scheduled in the U.S. District Court in Green Bay for Feb. 18. If he is convicted on the charge, he could potentially face a maximum prison sentence of 40 years.

Wisconsin takes felony drug charges seriously, and the punishments for those who are convicted can be harsh. For example, those who are convicted on charges for distribution of cocaine or marijuana may be sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence and steep fines and bear a mark on their record among others penalties. A criminal record may make it very difficult for convicted individuals to be able to find adequate employment or apply for loans.

A criminal defense attorney may be able to help a person facing serious drug-related charges in a number of ways. For example, if the evidence the prosecution has against the person is weak, the attorney may be able to challenge the charge. However, if the evidence is strong, the attorney may be able to negotiate a plea deal that reduces the length of the prison sentence and requires the person to enter a rehabilitation facility.
