Wisconsin student convicted of sex crime

We've seen many examples of how criminal charges can impact a person's life. A conviction can have an even greater affect on one's future, especially when it comes to college students. Even if the accusations are later deemed unfounded, the damage to a person's reputation can already be done.

A 20-year-old former student at the University of Wisconsin has been convicted in a case in connection with the victim of a sex crime. The student was accused of raping another student last year.

After hearing testimony in the case, a jury convicted the former student of second-degree criminal sexual assault. He was also convicted of an additional charge of unlawful imprisonment after the woman he assaulted said she was held in the room against her will.

The original charge was not the only one the student faced. He had also been accused of sexually assaulting another student. However the jury acquitted him of that charge.

Despite the allegations, the student maintains that his interactions with the two females were completely consensual. Typically if a sexual encounter is consensual, it is not a sex crime. However it appears that the jury did not see the interaction between the student and one of the females as consensual.

As a result, a La Crosse County judge sentenced the young man to serve a seven-year prison sentence. However even after he serves his sentence, the conviction continues to affect his life. He will still be under extended supervision for another 8 years.

The sexual assault conviction means that the former student has a permanent criminal record which could hamper his life including continuing his education at the university or in finding gainful employment.
